The article examines the motivation to receive education in the areas of training scientific and scientific-pedagogical personnel. It is noted that the motivation for admission to graduate school has not been sufficiently studied in the scientific literature. Motivation is defined by the author as a driving force for making certain decisions at different stages of specialist training, requiring special attention. It is proved that the modern education system is in a state of transition to a new stage of development, where relevant approaches to the organization and support of postgraduate studies are required. The rapid development of modern technologies leads to increased demand from employers for graduates' digital skills. Working with databases, programming systems, and automation systems are becoming sought-after skills for all professions. The labor market is analyzed, the fields of professional activity in which there is a request for candidates of sciences are identified. The author suggests mechanisms for the formation of motivation to obtain a PhD degree. It is emphasized that effective training of scientific and scientificpedagogical personnel requires an integrated approach to the organization of the postgraduate study process and further support for the defended candidates of sciences.
