HABITUS AS A CATEGORY IN SOCIAL SCIENCES: CONTRADICTION BETWEEN THE RESULTS OF THEORETICAL CONTENT AND EMPIRICAL DEFINITION

Podgorny B.B.

Abstract

In the social sciences today there is a discrepancy between the results of the theoretical content and the practical definition of the social field actors’ habitus. This article clarifies the semantic content of the «habitus» concept, as well as analyzes the applied research of this concept by the Russian scientific community. It is concluded that foreign and Russian scientists support in the majority the interpretations and characteristics of «habitus» concept, generalized and proposed by P. Bourdieu, while supplementing the content of this category with important provisions. The results of applied research were mostly obtained on the basis of the study of the existing practices of the respondents, which does not allow us to declare their representativeness. In addition, the content of the very concept of «habitus» is replaced in some cases. In conclusion, a methodological approach is proposed, which consists in determining habitus by comparing the direction of the main respondents’ disposition and their effective capital, which will allow us to get away from the definition of habitus through practices, as well as to obtain more reliable results for determining habitus.
