The article develops the theme of the mental structure of society as a factor in social development. The characteristic is given to such structural units of social consciousness as mass consciousness and scientific thinking. The phenomenon of mass man is studied in detail in relation to scientific development at the transition from the socie-ty of the 20th century to the society of the 21st century.
